Long-Term Disability Insurance
Long-term disability insurance replaces a portion of income when you are unable to work for an extended period due to a covered injury or illness. You may choose an elimination period of either 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year to coordinate with any short-term disability coverage and/or accumulated sick time.
Eligibility
Employees working at least 17.5 hours per week are eligible to enroll for coverage on their first day of employment (20 hours for CT Probate-eligible employees).

Benefit Offerings
PLAN OPTIONS
Employees can elect either 50% or 60% of their monthly salary, up to a maximum amount of $5,000. Employees can elect one of three benefit elimination periods: 90 days, 180 days, or 365 days. Note: The elimination period is the number of days after which you may receive monthly benefits. 365 days is recommended for those enrolled in the state-sponsored short-term disability plan.
Because the contributions for this coverage are made with after-tax dollars, any benefit received would be non-taxable.
GUARANTEED COVERAGE
New employees who enroll during the first 60 days of employment can obtain guaranteed coverage. If you waive participation and choose to enroll after the 60-day period, you will be subject to evidence of insurability guidelines.
Long-Term Disability coverage delivers a percentage of your income each month for as long as you remain disabled, or until you reach your Social Security Full Retirement Age, whichever comes sooner. Benefits from this plan are tax free. Premium payments can be made via payroll deduction.
This coverage may be of interest to members of Tier II, Tier IIA, Tier III and those on the Hybrid Plan of the State Employee Retirement System, as they are not eligible for non-service-related disability retirement benefits before completing 10 years of vesting service.
